Health and Safety Updates
|
Of course, the best way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is to get vaccinated. We highly recommend that all eligible people are vaccinated if attending Otakon this year.
If you are showing any symptoms (fever, cough, muscle or body aches, sore throat, runny nose, etc.) we ask that you keep the health and safety of your other con-goers in mind and avoid attending this year.

Masks will be required at all times, for anyone over the age of 2, in all convention areas inside the WEWCC and the Marriott M2 level. There are certain exceptions which our listed on our website. For the most up to date details on our mask policy, please visit:

As you enter the building, a no contact, real-time, multi-person thermal scanner will read your temperature. The WEWCC requires you to have a body temperature reading under 100.4°F in order to enter the building.
It is capable of reading groups of people at the same time and is not expected to slow down your entry into the building (you still go through bag check as well).
You will not need to remove your face mask in order for the system to work, but if you are wearing a full face helmet or other covering we may ask you to remove it as you enter the building.
The most up to date details on temperature checks are also on our website at:

You may have noticed that some of the late-night hours we normally keep have been cut back this year. This is to give facility staff extra time to give the entire convention center a thorough cleaning and sanitation.
As such, all programming inside the convention center will end at Midnight on Friday and Saturday nights.

GBAC STARTM facility accreditation means that WEWCC and their partners are implementing the highest standards for cleaning and disinfection of infectious agents like the novel coronavirus.
It provides third-party validation that facilities meet high levels of cleanliness and safety.

Technology Upgrades at the WEWCC
|
The WEWCC has made large investments in numerous technology updates to the facility to keep you safe and healthy. We'll summarize some of them here, but for all the details, click on the Health and Safety Updates tab on our location page here:
BIOPROTECTTM by SurfaceGuard
BIOPROTECT is a hospital grade antimicrobial which provides a long-lasting layer of protection against harmful microorganisms, including algae, bacteria, fungi, and mold. It has been proven to kill and provide residual surface protection against SARS-CoV-2 (the unique coronavirus that causes COVID-19) for more than six weeks.
The WEWCC treats all furnishings, tables, chairs, fabric, doors, escalator treads, fixed handrails, and glass surfaces in the Center with the BIOPROTECTTM process.
Synexis DHP BioDefense System
The Synexis system synthesizes Dry Hydrogen Peroxide (DHP), from ambient oxygen and humidity in rooms. DHP flows wherever the air flows in all the Center indoor spaces, safely and effectively breaking down pathogens in circulating air. By continuously flowing through the indoor spaces DHP reduces the level of viruses, bacteria, mold, and odors in the air and on all surfaces.
The WEWCC has installed the Synexis DHP BioDefense System in the HVAC systems serving the East and West Salons, all Meeting Rooms, and the Ballroom.
Sterile Touch – Sapphire LED UV-C Handrail Sterilization
Handrail Sterilization modules are used to efficiently disinfect the handrails of escalators to suppress the spread of viruses. The module is installed inside the escalator, ensuring passenger safety; handrails are automatically disinfected as they circulate through the module.
The WEWCC is installing the Sterile Touch – Sapphire LED UV-C Handrail Sterilization module on the most heavily used public escalators in the Center’s South (main entrance) and Middle (L Street entrance) Buildings.
